Health and Safety Policy for Storage Brondesbury
Storage Brondesbury is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks in our storage facilities and throughout our removal and transport operations. Our objective is to prevent injury, protect property, and promote safe working practices at all times.
Policy Statement
We recognise our duty to manage health and safety as an integral part of our business. Senior management is responsible for ensuring that appropriate resources, training, and supervision are provided so that all activities, including storage, handling, loading, unloading and removals, are carried out safely. We expect every person working for or with Storage Brondesbury to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Roles and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management. They will regularly review performance, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice standards. Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including monitoring working practices in storage areas, on vehicles and during collection and delivery activities.
Employees must cooperate fully with health and safety arrangements. This includes following procedures, using equipment correctly, reporting hazards, incidents or near-misses, and attending training as required. Contractors and temporary staff working on our premises or undertaking removal-related tasks are expected to adhere to the same health and safety standards as our own employees.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify significant hazards associated with storage operations, manual handling, vehicle movements, use of lifting equipment, and customer access to units. Formal risk assessments will be carried out and reviewed regularly, especially when new activities, equipment or processes are introduced. Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work that are communicated to staff and, where relevant, to customers and contractors.
Written instructions and method statements will be provided for tasks where the risk is significant, such as loading and unloading removal vehicles, operating handling equipment, stacking goods in storage spaces, and working in confined or restricted areas. Staff are expected to follow these instructions and raise concerns if they consider any task to be unsafe.
Safe Storage and Handling of Goods
To reduce the likelihood of accidents and damage, Storage Brondesbury will ensure that storage areas are organised, clean and well maintained. Shelving, racking and units will be used within their specified loading limits and checked periodically for damage. Items must be stored in a stable manner, with heavier goods placed lower and lighter goods above, to minimise the risk of falls.
Manual handling will be planned to avoid unnecessary lifting and carrying. Where reasonably practicable, mechanical aids such as sack trucks, dollies or pallet equipment will be provided and maintained. Employees engaged in removal and loading duties will receive guidance on lifting techniques and team handling procedures to minimise strain and musculoskeletal injuries.
Vehicles, Transport and Removal Operations
Our vehicles used for storage-related transport and removal services will be maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Pre-use checks will be carried out and defects reported and rectified promptly. Only authorised and competent drivers will operate company vehicles, and they must comply with traffic regulations and internal driving policies at all times.
Loading and unloading activities will be planned to prevent falls, crush injuries and damage to goods. Loads will be distributed evenly, secured using appropriate restraints, and checked before vehicles move off. Where access is restricted or there are specific site hazards, a pre-visit assessment will be carried out so that appropriate control measures can be put in place.
Workplace Environment and Welfare
We aim to provide a working environment within our storage facilities that is clean, orderly and secure. Lighting, ventilation and access routes will be maintained to a suitable standard so that staff and customers can move safely through the premises. Emergency exits will be clearly identified and kept unobstructed at all times.
Suitable welfare facilities, including toilets and handwashing, will be provided for employees and made available to customers and visitors where practicable. Drinking water and rest areas will be maintained in good condition, and housekeeping standards will be monitored routinely.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Appropriate fire precautions will be implemented throughout the storage premises. These may include alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting and clearly marked escape routes. Fire risk assessments will be carried out and reviewed periodically, and any necessary actions will be implemented without undue delay.
Staff will be informed of the emergency procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly points and how to raise the alarm. Periodic drills will be conducted to confirm that everyone understands their responsibilities. Where customers and contractors are on site, information will be given on what to do in the event of an emergency.
Information, Instruction and Training
Storage Brondesbury will provide employees with information, instruction and training relevant to their role. This may include induction training, safe use of equipment, manual handling, fire safety and specific procedures for handling customer property and removals work. Refresher training will be provided where necessary and when significant changes arise in working methods or equipment.
Health and safety notices will be displayed at key locations to reinforce safe behaviour and remind staff and visitors of site rules. Supervisors will check understanding during routine work and provide additional guidance where required.
Consultation, Reporting and Continuous Improvement
We encourage open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are expected to report hazards, defects, accidents and near-misses promptly so that appropriate action can be taken. Records of incidents will be reviewed to identify trends and opportunities for improvement, particularly in storage and removal operations where manual handling and vehicle movements present greater risks.
Management will periodically review this Health and Safety Policy to ensure it remains effective and relevant to our activities. Improvements may be made following audits, inspections, changes in legislation, guidance from enforcement bodies, or feedback from employees and customers. Updated versions of this policy will be communicated to all staff.
Policy Review and Approval
This Health and Safety Policy has been approved by the management of Storage Brondesbury. It will be reviewed regularly and revised as necessary to reflect changes in our operations, including the development of our storage and removal services. All employees, contractors, customers and visitors are expected to cooperate in implementing this policy and maintaining a safe environment for everyone who uses our facilities or works with our company.
